There is a digital revolution sweeping through the photography business that has produced shorter wait times and greater mobility and image storage capabilities.

"Very few people want to wait for film nowadays," said Cindy Williams, owner of Eagle Photo Supply on Islington Street. "Digital has changed photography, making it almost instantaneous."

That change is evident everywhere in Williams' shop. Eagle Photo suddenly has Kodak stations at which customers may upload photo files, rows of digital cameras lining the shelves and massive printers dedicated to producing digital prints.

While technology is producing a challenge for the business sector, the world of photography as a whole is changing. Williams said there are many more people coming into her store eager to get help producing their digital photos.

Budd Perry, owner of Memories Studio on Lafayette Road in Rye, said the shift has made the process of developing professional photos for clients much easier and far less time consuming. The financial commitment for him in terms of the equipment necessary to print digital photos comes out to a wash at best, he said, but it allows him to provide new services for his clients.

Perry has developed his "Memories in Motion" van, which serves as a mobile photo lab. The digitally equipped vehicle allows him to go anywhere and produce professional photos on the spot.

"Overall, I have to say it's been a great transition. It's definitely the biggest change in the industry in many years, and it's been a hoot for me," Perry said.

"The public knows they can take pictures with their digitals, and edit them — and the end result will be a halfway decent photo. It's cyclical, of course, and eventually people will realize it's not the camera, but the photographer that makes a really great photo," he said.

But the slow decline in demand for conventional film — though Williams said it's hardly dead yet — seems inevitable in the face of technological advances that make photography easier for most.

Williams said it has forced companies like Kodak and Fuji to adapt quickly, removing some films and promoting new digital technologies online. The change has left old-school types wondering where the fun has gone.

"It's just so much easier to do, there's no debate about that. But it takes away the mystery of bringing in your pictures and wondering what they were going to look like, how that one shot came out," Williams said.

"It's all digital now, but it could be done very differently in 30 years. I'm amazed by the changes I've seen, so you can imagine how amazing it is for people on the fringes," he said.
